BYD's Intelligent Driving Update Team Size, R & D Investment, and Future Goals

TapTechNews August 21 news, 36kr interviewed Yang Dongsheng, vice president of BYD and dean of the New Automobile Technology Research Institute, and revealed some information about BYD:

BYD's intelligent driving team currently has more than 5,000 people, far exceeding the industry average, among which the core algorithm team has more than 1,000 people.

The system innovation team of BYD has 15,000 people.

BYD's R & D investment in 2023 is 39.918 billion yuan, achieving a doubling growth.

Wang Chuanfu's recent focus is on intelligent driving and requires the whole vehicle design to cooperate around intelligent driving.

The core R & D of the battery mainly involves cell design and PACK design, with a total of about four or five hundred people in these two aspects.

In the Tengshi Research Institute, it is mainly about sports performance to solve safety problems with sports performance.

Yang Dongsheng pointed out that advanced intelligent driving has kicked off the second half of the intelligentization. From the city-opening competition to being able to drive on any road, from BEV + transformer to the on-board of the end-to-end large model, no car company wants to fall behind.

He said that BYD's internal definition of intelligent driving is different from that of other car companies. BYD believes that the urban intelligent driving of other car companies belongs to narrow autonomous driving, while BYD wants to do generalized intelligent driving, that is, narrow autonomous driving +璇玑 architecture + electrification, which can achieve super-human driving assistance.

We are really end-to-end, from the end induction of the tire to the reaction and strategy of the brain, and then to the control of the tire. The end of others is obtained from perception to regulation and control, while mine is obtained from the actuator to the actuator.

In the future, BYD's goal is to popularize advanced intelligent driving in low-end models. Yang Dongsheng believes that: Reducing traffic accidents and increasing safety are necessities, and BYD hopes this necessity can sink.

Yang Dongsheng revealed that (BYD) mid- and low-end models will be equipped with advanced intelligent driving within two years. Allegedly, BYD will make a compression of the overall plan and move it to the mid- and low-end models for the most commonly used advanced intelligent driving functions of consumers after market research.

Referring to TapTechNews' previous report, BYD's goal is to deploy advanced intelligent driving to models below 200,000 yuan, and even below 100,000 yuan. He also emphasized this aspect here:

Because now advanced intelligent driving is still in cars around 200,000 or more than 200,000. We at BYD hope that ordinary consumers can enjoy advanced intelligent driving. Because reducing traffic accidents and increasing safety are necessities, we hope this necessity can sink, and even cars below 100,000 yuan should have it.

So our future goal is to make advanced intelligent driving fully used in mid- and low-end cars through BYD's vertical integration ability and the improvement of the algorithm, which is our goal.
