Square Enix Announces Multi-Platform Game Publishing Strategy and Layoffs

TapTechNews May 14 news, Japanese game publisher and developer Square Enix announced in a press release yesterday that it plans to adjust its publishing strategy. In addition to launching large AAA games on multiple platforms, it also announced layoffs at its North American and European subsidiaries, affecting employees in publishing, IT, and indie game departments, but the number of layoffs has not been determined.

According to local laws in the UK, Square Enix UK employees will have a one-month consultation period, while affected American employees may need to leave by the end of June.

After Monday's internal meeting, many of Square Enix's key Slack channels were locked.

The signs were already in Square Enix's recent financial reports, with the company planning to rebuild its overseas business department from scratch and begin optimizing the costs of its European and American offices through structural reforms.

On the same day that this news was released, Square Enix announced a major shift in its game publishing strategy. Previously, games such as Final Fantasy 7 Remake and Final Fantasy 16 from the publisher were first released on Sony's PlayStation 5 console and then on other platforms.

As reported by TapTechNews earlier, under the new publishing strategy, the company is actively promoting a multi-platform strategy and will release games on Nintendo, PlayStation, Xbox, and PC platforms simultaneously.

The plan also added that the publisher plans to establish a platform that allows more users to enjoy our major IP and AAA games, enabling players to enjoy all the company's games.
