Microsoft's Plan to Enhance Recall Function Despite Privacy Concerns

TapTechNews June 16th, despite continuous privacy concerns, Microsoft still plans to add more features to its new artificial intelligence-assisted function, Recall. Since the launch of the Copilot+ service, Recall has been controversial. It works by periodically taking desktop screenshots, which has sparked resistance from many users. To make matters worse, it was discovered that Recall saves the historical records (in plain text) of users' activities, forcing Microsoft to temporarily postpone the release of this function.

However, this doesn't seem to stop Microsoft from continuing to add new features to Recall. According to Tom's Hardware, the latest Windows 11 Canary version hides a new feature called Screenray, which allows users to provide desktop screenshots to Copilot to analyze some of the content. TapTechNews noticed that, from a technical perspective, Screenray is not complicated. Users only need to press the Win+Shift+D key combination, and Windows 11 will take a desktop screenshot and analyze it through Recall, which can be understood as manually triggering the Recall function.

In theory, the screenshots taken through Screenray can allow Copilot to translate the text on the screen or analyze the image content. Currently, this function is only tested in the Insider channel, and Microsoft will also take this opportunity to test the new security measures of Recall to prepare for its official release. How the Recall function will eventually develop remains to be observed further after its re-emergence in the Windows 11 Copilot+ service.
