China Set to Overtake South Korea in OLED Market Share A New Era in Display Technology

TapTechNews August 16th news, according to the CINNO Research report, it is expected that in this year's OLED market, calculated on an area basis, China will occupy the first position globally.

The CEO of CINNO company, Sally Chen, presented at the 'Display Business Forum 2024' held in COEX in Gangnam-gu, Seoul on the 13th, 'China Display Market: Enter to Next Era'.

CEO Chen said, 'In terms of area, China takes the lead in the overall share of the OLED market this year', and also said, 'In the field of OLED panels for smartphones, the shipment ratio of Chinese manufacturers in the first quarter reached 51%, surpassing South Korea for the first time.'

She predicted that in this year's global smartphone OLED market, Chinese manufacturers will continue to maintain the largest market share. She said, 'Chinese panel manufacturers have strong Display design capabilities and technical strength such as Tandem OLED'. She said, 'China has become the largest producer country of OLED smartphone panels in the world. BOE and Visionox are currently investing in large-size OLED, and Tianma and TCL China Star are also considering investing in large-size OLED panels'.

CEO Chen also mentioned in the speech, 'Last year, Samsung Display had the highest revenue among panel manufacturers, and the combined total of the top 3 Chinese manufacturers is only 10% of Samsung's.'

If this assertion is accurate, then it reveals that after South Korea's leading position in the LCD field was surpassed by China in 2018, recently China has also achieved a reverse超车 over South Korea in the field of OLED with higher technical thresholds.

TapTechNews noted that according to the analysis data of the market research company Omdia, in the first quarter of this year, the market share (based on shipment volume) of Chinese panel manufacturers in the overall OLED market including small and medium-sized OLEDs reached 49.7%. While the market share of the South Korean market, which has always occupied the first position, dropped to the second place at 49%. Data from a year ago showed that South Korea accounted for 62.3% of the share, while China was 36.6%.

In addition, Yoshio Tamura, the co-founder of DSCC, said, 'Chinese OLED manufacturers are expected to suffer losses of up to 20-30%', and analyzed that it is impossible to achieve profitability in the short term. However, he expects that OLED investment will continue. Mainly considering the government subsidies for production line expansion.
