FCC Proposes New Rule to Unlock US Phones within 60 Days of Activation

TapTechNews on June 29, the US Federal Communications Commission (FCC) has proposed a new proposal requiring US wireless carriers to unlock devices within 60 days after mobile phone activation, meaning that consumers can unlock their phones more easily. The proposal is currently in the draft stage, and the commission will discuss it at the public meeting on July 18.

TapTechNews briefly introduces the locked version. In simple terms, it means the network is locked and only supports the network of a specific carrier, and it needs to be unlocked in a special way to be used normally, such as a SIM card adapter or a jailbreak. Different unlocking methods will be chosen depending on the model, and as for the effect after unlocking, it often depends on luck.

In the case of Apple's iPhone, for example, the iPhone can be cracked through methods such as a SIM card adapter, but later there may be situations such as inability to activate or inability to use the SIM card.

The mobile phones of the locked version usually have a lower price and are usually promoted in the form of a guaranteed consumption of phone bills. Before the contract expires or the full payment is made, the mobile phone will remain locked and can only use the network of the designated carrier.

The FCC plans to vote on the proposal to expand the requirement for mobile phone unlocking on July 18, 2024, and will also seek the opinions and feedback of carriers and consumers later.
