ByteDance's Feilian Screenshot Controversy

On the afternoon of June 21, recently, some ByteDance employees said that after installing Feilian (Feilian is an office platform used internally by ByteDance and open to the outside world), they accidentally found the process of screenshot (screen capture) being executed in the background by Feilian. This user reminded that on the computers where such software is installed, don't do things that should not be done.

Sina Technology asked ByteDance about this, and relevant personnel said that Feilian provides data security protection functions for enterprise customers. Enterprises can set the function configuration of the automated audit strategy according to their own business needs and the sensitivity of the data. The situation described in the forum post is that the enterprise administrator has enabled the DLP (Data Loss Prevention) function for the devices that store sensitive data. Feilian will take screenshots of sensitive devices that have enabled the DLP function at regular intervals in a cycle:

1. When the screenshot content does not hit the sensitive data set by the enterprise, the new screenshot will cover the old screenshot, and the historical screenshots will be deleted. These screenshots will only exist on the device locally;

2. When the screenshot content hits the sensitive data, the screenshot will be transmitted to the enterprise server for the enterprise to conduct a security audit.
