Geely's Polestar Starts US Manufacturing, Plans for Europe and US Markets
TapTechNews August 15th news, according to Reuters, on Wednesday local time, Polestar, the high-end electric vehicle brand under Geely Holding Group (Chinese name 极星), announced that it has begun manufacturing in the US of the Polestar 3 all-electric SUV.
Reports said that recently, tariffs on Chinese-made electric vehicles have begun to be imposed in Europe and the US, prompting many (Chinese) automakers to accelerate their plans to transfer some production to other countries.
The Made in the US Polestar 3 will be produced at Volvo's factory in South Carolina and sold to users in the US and Europe. Polestar CEO Thomas Ingenlath told Reuters that the factory is expected to reach full capacity production within two months and will start supplying to US customers next month and then to Europe. However, Thomas Ingenlath refused to disclose the specific capacity of this factory.
According to the Kelley Blue Book report's estimate, Polestar sold 3,555 all-electric Polestar 2 sedans in the US in the first half of this year. In addition, the company also plans to produce the Polestar 4 coupe SUV at Geely Holding's Renault Korea plant in the second half of this year and sell it to Europe and the US.
According to TapTechNews' previous report, the domestically-produced Polestar 3 by Zhejiang Haoqing Automobile Manufacturing Co., Ltd. also landed on the latest batch of application list of the Ministry of Industry and Information Technology earlier this month. The new car is 4900mm long, 1968mm wide, 1614mm high, and has a wheelbase of 2985mm, with optional pixel headlights, standard front and rear golden brake calipers, and optional different styles of rims and privacy glass.
This car has declared two different versions this time, both of which are dual-motor all-wheel drive layouts with different powers. The motor of this car comes from Delta Electronics (Jiangsu) Co., Ltd., and the power of the front and rear motors provides 180kW/200kW and 173kW/187kW. The ternary lithium battery comes from Sichuan Times New Energy Technology Co., Ltd.
There are three models of Polestar Polestar 3 on sale in the European market.
Single-motor long range: 220kW, 490Nm, 0-100km/h acceleration in 7.8 seconds, WLTP range of 650km.
Double-motor long range: 360kW, 840Nm, 0-100km/h acceleration in 5.0 seconds, WLTP range of 631km.
Double-motor long range with performance package: 380kW, 910Nm, 0-100km/h acceleration in 4.7 seconds, WLTP range of 561km.
