Samsung and SK Hynix General DRAM Capacity Utilization and Market Situation

TapTechNews June 19 news, the South Korean media ETNews quoted people in the industry as saying that the current general DRAM memory capacity utilization rate of the two major South Korean storage giants Samsung Electronics and SK Hynix remains at the level of 80 to 90%.

The South Korean media claims that this situation forms a sharp contrast with the NAND flash memory industry where major enterprises have achieved normal production: In addition to Kioxia, Samsung Electronics and SK Hynix have also achieved full-load operation of the NAND production line in this quarter.

It is reported that the current overall demand for general DRAM (TapTechNews note: that is, regular DDR, LPDDR) is sluggish overall, and the market still presents a situation of oversupply, which is caused by the slow recovery of downstream traditional server, smart phone and PC industries.

Recently, global technology enterprises have strengthened the construction of artificial intelligence infrastructure, and the investment quota allocated to traditional servers has correspondingly decreased significantly. And traditional servers are the main source of general DRAM orders.

At the same time, in recent years, the server update cycle of major giants has been prolonged, and the purchase volume of advanced general DRAM has also decreased as a result.

In the consumer sector, the rebound in the shipments of smart phones and PCs has stalled, and some research institutions believe that the full-year increase will only reach 2 to 3%.

Previously, there were voices in the industry that the increase in production of HBM memory will squeeze the amount of wafers for general DRAM, and then cause a shortage of general DRAM supply in the second half of the year.

But some insiders believe that according to the current situation, this situation is difficult to occur:

The operating rate of the Korean general DRAM production lines in the first six months of this year has only increased by 10%, and there is still room for improvement at the current level; at the same time, the number of orders received by DRAM testing enterprises has not significantly increased.
