Southeast University Establishes Organ-on-a-Chip Research Institute

TapTechNews May 28th news, according to the official news of the Suzhou Institute of Medical Devices of Southeast University, on the morning of May 26, 2024, while Southeast University was celebrating its 122nd anniversary, the Innovation and Development Conference of Medicine and Life Sciences of Southeast University was held in Nanjing Jiangbei New Area, and at the same time, the inauguration ceremony of the Organ-on-a-Chip Research Institute of Southeast University (hereinafter referred to as the 'Institute') was held.

It is introduced that the Organ-on-a-Chip Research Institute is a new type of scientific research institution directly managed by Southeast University with a 'cientific research entity and administrative virtual entity'. It will break the traditional disciplinary and departmental barriers. Led by the School of Biological Sciences and Medical Engineering of Southeast University, it will be jointly built, jointly managed and jointly shared with other relevant schools of Southeast University.

The Institute is led by Professor Gu Zhongze, the dean of the School of Biological Sciences and Medical Engineering of Southeast University, the director of the National Key Laboratory of Digital Medical Engineering, and the dean of the Jiangsu Institute of Sports and Health.

The official said that the Institute will use various resources to introduce talents, break the identity boundaries of teachers and researchers, gather multiple disciplinary research directions such as biomedicine, materials science, and nanotechnology, and form a high-level interdisciplinary research team to fully build a 'three-high' (high-level, high-input, and high-output) academic special zone.

Dean Gu Zhongze of the Organ-on-a-Chip Research Institute said, 'Human organ-on-a-chip technology is a key core technology that urgently needs to be conquered in the field of biomedicine in China.' The establishment of the Institute will be conducive to giving play to the team role of disciplinary research, attracting outstanding research talents at home and abroad, gathering and stabilizing a number of high-level scientific research teams, and conducting basic research, applied basic research and key engineering technology research around major national strategies and scientific frontiers for a long time and stably, which will help to improve the academic and scientific research level of life medicine-related disciplines and promote the development of disciplines, and make new and greater contributions to protecting people's lives and health.

TapTechNews found out that Professor Gu Zhongze's research directions include bioelectronic devices, nano-bionic materials, etc., and has made some progress in the field of organ-on-a-chip research.

In October last year, with the cooperation of Professor Gu Zhongze's team and Huawei, the world's first human organ-on-a-chip pharmaceutical big model came out. This model is based on Huawei's Pangu drug molecular big model, Huawei's omics big model and self-developed cell imaging big model, combined with wet experiments of organ-on-a-chip to boost the whole process of drug development.

In February this year, the Life Sciences Society Consortium of the China Association for Science and Technology released the 'Top Ten Advances in Life Sciences in China in 2023', and Professor Gu Zhongze's project 'Construction of human organ-on-a-chip and multi-modal accurate measurement methods' was successfully selected.
