TapTechNews note: In 2018, Tencent and SqureEnix announced the formation of a strategic alliance, and the achievements of this alliance include establishing a cooperative company, jointly developing a 3A-level game based on a new IP, licensing existing IPs, etc.

And in 2021, the then president of SquareEnix, Yosuke Matsuda, once confirmed that part of the projects cooperated by the two companies are underway.

Earlier this year, foreign media reported that Tencent stopped an unannounced mobile game of the NieR series in December last year. This project has been in development for more than two years, and part of the reason for its suspension is the expensive development cost and franchise rights, and the team is difficult to find a convincing profit model.

Tencent and SquareEnix both refused to comment on this matter. SquareEnix said last April that the latest work in the NieR series, NieR: Automata, has sold more than 7.5 million copies since its release in 2017.
