Google's AI-based Search Feature Faces Challenges

TapTechNews June 21st news, at this year's Google I/O conference, Google launched a blockbuster feature - AI-based search (AI summaries / AI Overviews). However, shortly after this feature went live, many users reported that the AI would generate some strange results, such as putting glue in pizza to prevent toppings from falling off, eating several small stones every day, and so on.

It is learned that some strange responses are caused by the AI system extracting information from Reddit posts, for example, putting glue in pizza comes from a Reddit post 11 years ago. According to the data released by the search engine optimization platform SERanking on the 20th local time, Reddit is no longer among the top ten information sources for Google's AI summary function.

The platform analyzed 100,000 keywords and found that the top five results came from RunnersWorld, Healthline, LinkedIn, RunRepeat, and Wikipedia. As for what rank Reddit is, it is not yet known, but the platform claims that Reddit did rank in the top ten in the past certain period of time.

Also according to AndroidAuthority, a similar search engine optimization platform SEOClarity also said that in its tested searches, only 7.6% of the search content showed the results generated by AI summary, which is lower than the 17.4% observed during the period from May 14th to 30th.

According to TapTechNews' previous report, Google's chief executive officer Sundar Pichai previously admitted in an interview that the hallucinations generated by these AI summary functions are the inherent flaws of large language models (LLM), and large language models are the core technology of the AI summary function. Pichai said in May this year that this problem still has no solution (is still an unsolved problem).
