Foldable Smartphones Future Trends and Market Outlook

TapTechNews June 3rd news, a TrendForce report said that the shipment volume of foldable smartphones is expected to reach 17.8 million units in 2024, accounting for only 1.5% of the smart phone market share, and it is estimated that the market share will climb to 4.8% in 2028.

Compared with the prediction report released by TrendForce at the beginning of this year, as the leader of foldable smartphones, Samsung's market share will be further reduced. Its market share may be further reduced from 60% to 50% this year, while Huawei's market share will increase from 11.9% to 30.8%.

TapTechNews learned from the report that the repair rate and cost of foldable smartphones are relatively high, and the sales of foldable smartphones such as Xiaomi, OPPO, and vivo have shown weak growth and have all fallen below 1 million units. But the low-priced foldable smartphones such as Motorola Razr40 and Nubia Flip have greatly attracted consumers. Motorola is expected to break through the 1 million-unit sales mark with the Razr40 series and will occupy a 6% market share; and the starting price of Nubia Flip at 2999 Yuan has further lowered the threshold of foldable smartphones, making them more cost-effective.

The report also pointed out that Apple is still evaluating the related components and phone performance of foldable phones, and has strict requirements on creases and reliability, so it is unlikely to launch a foldable phone before 2027. Once Apple launches its foldable phone product, it may greatly change the pattern of the entire foldable phone market.
