AMD's Performance in 2024 Q2 Gains and Challenges in CPU Market

TapTechNews August 13th news, according to the latest report from market research firm MercuryResearch, AMD has once again achieved excellent results in the second quarter of 2024, with both its data center and notebook CPU market shares increasing. However, Intel has improved its market share in the desktop market and continues to lead in overall shipments.

TapTechNews noticed that Intel continued to dominate the client PC market in the second quarter of 2024, occupying 78.9% of the market share, while AMD was 21.1%. Considering Intel's strong client product line, this result is expected. Nevertheless, AMD's shipment share still achieved a sequential increase of 0.5% and a year-on-year increase of 3.8%. It may take AMD several years to completely reverse the market situation, not only because Intel dominates in enterprise PC sales, but also because of its huge production capacity.

In the desktop market, AMD's market share in the second quarter of 2024 was taken away by Intel by 1%, and currently controls 23% of the market, while Intel occupies 77%. Considering that AMD is about to release a brand-new Zen5 architecture desktop CPU in August, this may be one of the reasons for its loss of some market share. However, compared to the second quarter of 2023, AMD still achieved a 3.6% year-on-year increase in share in the second quarter of 2024, which is a fairly good result.

In the notebook sector, AMD achieved sequential and year-on-year growth. The company occupied 20.3% of the x86 notebook processor market in the second quarter of 2024, an increase of 1% from the first quarter of this year and a 3.8% increase from the same period last year. However, AMD's notebook CPU revenue share was 17.7%, far lower than its 20.3% shipment share.

AMD's greatest success in the second quarter may lie in the server field. The company has again successfully taken away 0.5% of the share from Intel and currently controls 24.1% of the data center CPU market with its EPYC CPU, setting a new record for the company's highest server market share in decades.

Although Intel is still the undisputed leader in shipments and controlled about 75.9% of the data center CPU shipments in the second quarter, it is worth noting that AMD seems to be in the lead in the field of machines that require the highest performance and the most expensive processors, which can be concluded from the financial performance of the two companies in the second quarter of 2024. Intel earned $3 billion by selling 75.9% of the data center CPUs (by shipments), while AMD ea rned $28 billion by selling 24.1% of the server CPUs (by shipments), indicating that the average price of AMDEPYC is significantly higher than that of Intel Xeon.

In fact, according to AMD's own calculation based on MercuryResearch data, AMD's revenue share in the server market in the second quarter of 2024 was 33.7%, an increase of 0.7% sequentially and a 6.6% year-on-year increase. In addition, Intel currently has no product to compete with AMD's 96-core and 128-core processors, so AMD controls the high-end server market.
