Hong Kong University of Science and Technology Testing AI Lecturers

TapTechNews May 12 report, according to Agence France-Presse and Sin Chew Daily, The Hong Kong University of Science and Technology has recently started testing the deployment of 'AI lecturers'. Students can see 'Einstein' digital figures explain game theory through devices such as headsets.

The university has designed 10 AI lecturers from different countries, industries, ethnicities, and cultural backgrounds using generative AI tools. It is hoped that this innovative teaching model will inspire students' enthusiasm for learning and improve classroom engagement. In the future, personalized AI classrooms will be designed based on students' preferences and interests.

Professor Xu Bin, who leads this AI project, said he is not worried about being replaced by AI. In fact, this new technology can help alleviate the global teacher shortage. 'AI teachers can bring diversity, fun, and even immersive storytelling,' he added.

Currently, AI lecturers have been used in the university's social media course, teaching 30 graduate students about the impact of immersive technology and digital platforms. Xu Bin revealed that they are currently testing digital figures of different genders and racial backgrounds, with the 'most popular lecturer type being young and beautiful women.'

According to reports, Professor Chen Jiayu of The University of Hong Kong surveyed more than 400 students last year, and the results showed that respondents prefer human lecturers because they can provide their own experiences, feedback, and empathy. However, students have already started using AI tools for learning.
