Google's New Pixel 9 Series Plastic-Free Packaging and Design Controversy

Google has been committed to environmental protection in recent years and has extensively used recycled plastic in hardware and accessories. The packaging also follows this concept, mainly using cardboard and very little plastic. And the Pixel 9 series goes a step further and achieves completely plastic-free packaging, including the packaging of other product lines such as Nest and Fitbit.

However, the new packaging design has also attracted a lot of doubts. Different from the exquisite packaging box design of Pixel 8, the packaging of Pixel 9 adopts a more plain design. The outer layer is a sliding paper sleeve, and the inner part is a paper box, giving people a strong sense of recycled materials. Although Google hopes to convey the concept of environmental protection through this, for a flagship phone with a price of more than 800 US dollars (TapTechNews note: currently about 5,711 RMB), such packaging inevitably gives a feeling of being cheap.

Nonetheless, Google emphasized their innovation in materials, including a more sturdy and durable outer box paper and an improved molded fiber paper pulp inner support. The application of these new materials makes it possible to achieve completely plastic-free packaging.
