LG Display Sells Guangzhou Factory to TCL China Star, Reshaping Display Market

TapTechNews August 14th news, according to the report of BusinessKorea on the 13th, LG Display has decided to sell its 8.5-generation Guangzhou liquid crystal display factory to China Star Optoelectronics Technology Co., Ltd. (TCL China Star) under TCL Technology, and this move is expected to reshape the pattern of the global display market.

As of this year, the market share of China Star Optoelectronics (based on production capacity) is 19.7%. Through the acquisition of LG Display's Guangzhou factory, its market share is expected to increase to 23.9% by 2026. Coupled with the 27.0% market share of BOE, the two Chinese companies will jointly occupy half of the market share.

In contrast, this may lead to the LCD market share of LG Display dropping from 6.2% in 2023 to 4.2%, and it is expected to drop to 1.8% in 2027.

This is in sharp contrast to the 55% market share jointly occupied by Samsung Display and LG Display in 2011, and Samsung Display has completely exited the LCD business in 2022.

According to the previous report of TapTechNews, LG Display released an announcement earlier this month to explain the relevant content of LGD accelerates the sale of Chinese factories... reported by the Korea Economic Daily in February this year. The company has selected China Star Optoelectronics Technology Co., Ltd. as the preferred bidder for the equity of its LCD factory in Guangzhou, China, and will start exclusive negotiations.
