Samsung Releases 60-Terabyte Solid-State Drive for Enterprise Users

TapTechNews July 7th news, memory and storage chip manufacturer Samsung has released its first 60-terabyte solid-state drive. This extremely large-capacity solid-state drive is specifically designed for enterprise users and not for the general consumer market. Thanks to the new main controller, Samsung says it can even make 120-terabyte solid-state drives in the future.

In the past, the capacity limit of Samsung's solid-state drives was 32 terabytes, and this time the BM1743 solid-state drive has increased the capacity to an astonishing 61.44 terabytes. This 60-terabyte-class solid-state drive will compete with Solidigm's D5-P5336 and Western Digital's 60-terabyte-class enterprise solid-state drive.

The BM1743 uses Samsung's independently developed seventh-generation 176-layer V-NAND (3D NAND) QLC storage unit and its exclusive main controller. Its sequential read speed can reach 7.2 GB/s, and the sequential write speed is 2.0 GB/s. In terms of random read and write performance, the BM1743 has 1.6 million random read IOPS and 110,000 random write IOPS. The durability of this solid-state drive is 0.26 writes per day (DWPD) and can last for five years.

According to the official news from Samsung, this new solid-state drive will provide two interface specifications, namely the U.2 and PCIe 4.0x4 interfaces suitable for servers. In addition, for devices that require higher storage density, Samsung will also provide the E3.S version that supports the PCIe 5.0x4 interface. At present, the official has not announced the price and power consumption and other information, but the price of a solid-state drive with similar specifications is about 7000 US dollars (TapTechNews note: currently about 50,973 RMB).

At present, Samsung will face relatively little competition in this market segment, because its main competitors Kioxia, Micron, and SK Hynix have not yet launched 60-terabyte-class solid-state drive products.
