Gigabyte Releases High-Durability AITOP100E Solid-State Drive with Advanced Technology
TapTechNews June 24th news, Gigabyte previously released the AITOP100E solid-state drive for AI workloads, which is based on Phison aiDAPTIV+ technology and has an extremely high durability of approximately 60 DWPD.
The AITOP100E is in the M.2 2280 form factor, with PCIe Gen4 x4 specifications, compliant with the NVMe 1.4 protocol, and the sequential read and write speed can reach 7200/6500 MB/s. The 1TB version has a nominal durability of 109500 TBW, and the 2TB version is even doubled to 219000 TBW.
TapTechNews note: DWPD means (average) daily full disk writes, which is a common durability standard for enterprise-level solid-state drives. The warranty period of the AITOP100E is 5 years, which is exactly 60 DWPD when calculated based on 365 days per year.
German media ComputerBase recently learned from Gigabyte officials that one of the important reasons for the extremely high durability of the AITOP100E is the use of TLC flash memory that far exceeds the nominal capacity and the assistance of pSLC (statically emulated SLC) technology.
The Gigabyte AITOP100E solid-state drives all come with 4 times the BiCS5 TLC flash memory particles of the nominal capacity (that is, the 4 TB flash memory for the 1 TB version and the 8 TB flash memory for the 2 TB version). These flash memories are not directly used as TLC but are enabled in the pSLC mode, compressing the capacity to one-third of the original.
On this basis, this series of solid-state drives also sets aside an additional one-fourth of the flash memory particles as additional reserved space (that is, the additional OP area), further alleviating the wear of NAND flash memory and enhancing the durability of the solid-state drive.
This unconventional configuration of NAND flash memory capacity also explains why the maximum read and write power consumption of the Gigabyte AITOP100E can reach more than 10 watts.
In addition, this solid-state drive is equipped with a Phison PS5018-E18 main controller and is equipped with external LPDDR4 cache according to the common 1:1000 ratio.
