From January to April, a total of 3.7 million new cars were registered in the European Union, an increase of 6.6% year-on-year. The increase was mainly concentrated in Germany and Spain, both at 7.8%, France increased by 7%, and Italy increased by 6.1%.

TapTechNews noticed that the market share of gasoline and diesel models in the European Union is declining. In April this year, the market share of gasoline and diesel models in the European Union was 48.9%, while it was 52.8% in the same period last year. This portion of the ceded market share is mainly filled by hybrid models, and its market share has risen from 24.9% to 29.1%. It is worth noting that the sales of gasoline models in the European Union last month climbed by 7.3% to 328,967 units, mainly due to the increases in Spain (+24.1%), Germany (+18.6%) and Italy (+14.1%).

The diesel car market remained stable, with 118,000 units sold in April, accounting for 13% of the market share. The sales of diesel cars increased by 28.1% in Germany, but decreased by 21.1% in Italy, 19.3% in Spain, and 18.1% in France.

The interest in electric vehicles in the European Union market continues to grow. In April, the sales of traditional hybrid electric vehicles soared by 33.1%, including 48.1% growth in France, 38.5% growth in Spain, and 25.9% growth in Germany. A total of 265,992 hybrid electric vehicles were sold in April. The sales of plug-in hybrid electric vehicles increased by 3.7% last month to 62,148 units.

The registration volume of pure electric vehicles in the European Union also skyrocketed by 14.8% last month to 108,552 units, with France and Belgium increasing by 45.2% and 41.6% respectively. The market share of pure electric vehicles remains stable at 11.9%. From January to April this year, a total of 441,992 pure electric vehicles were registered in the European Union, an increase of 6.4% year-on-year.
