TapTechNews note: This project started construction in August 2015 and officially entered commercial operation on May 20, 2021, creating the shortest construction period record and the best construction performance for the first overseas reactor of international third-generation nuclear power. It won the Best Practice Case of Energy International Cooperation at the Second 'Belt and Road Initiative' Energy Ministers' Meeting and is the first nuclear power unit in Pakistan to achieve continuous operation for 100 days after being put into commercial operation.

In February last year, Pakistan held the completion ceremony of Unit 3 (K-3) of Karachi Nuclear Power Plant, and the two million-kilowatt units of China's independently developed third-generation nuclear power Hualong One exported to Pakistan were officially delivered to Pakistan after being built and put into production.

Karachi K-2/K-3 is the largest nuclear power plant in Pakistan and also the first single-unit million-kilowatt-level power project in Pakistan, which is general contracted by China Zhongyuan Engineering Corp., a subsidiary of China National Nuclear Corporation. On May 20, 2021, K-2 unit officially entered commercial operation. On April 18, 2022, K-3 unit was successfully temporarily accepted.

The K-2/K-3 unit project has cumulatively generated nearly 20 billion kWh of electricity, meeting the annual production and living electricity needs of 2 million local people.
