Qualcomm & China Unicom Demo 5G-A Milestone in Chengdu

TapTechNews June 24th, Qualcomm China announced that recently, at the new technology testing site in Chengdu, China Unicom Research Institute and Qualcomm Technologies demonstrated a new milestone of 5G Advanced (5G-A) technology.

The two sides jointly deployed an innovative 5G-A high- and low-frequency multi-carrier aggregation scheme, and successfully verified the high-speed experience under the new NR-CA networking architecture for the first time.

In this verification, 800 MHz bandwidth in the high-frequency band and 100 MHz bandwidth in the 3.5 GHz low-frequency band were used for carrier aggregation, and a single-user downlink peak rate of more than 8.5 Gbps (TapTechNews note: more than 1 GB/s) was achieved on a smart phone-shaped terminal equipped with the Snapdragon X80 modem and radio frequency system.

Qualcomm China introduced that the application of 5G-A high- and low-frequency new carrier aggregation technology not only improves the utilization efficiency of spectrum resources, but also provides technical support for a variety of emerging businesses. The network can intelligently and quickly adjust the use of high-frequency carriers according to the characteristics of user business traffic, so as to optimize the user experience and reduce latency. This is crucial for promoting the development of 4K/8K sports event live broadcasts, XR (Extended Reality), naked-eye 3D and other ultra-high-definition video live broadcast businesses.

The high- and low-frequency NR-CA can give full play to the advantages of large millimeter-wave bandwidth and good coverage of 3.5 GHz at the same time, so as to ensure the continuous high-speed experience of 5G users and is the mainstream technical direction of 5G high- and low-frequency coordination.
