Near-Eye Display Device Forecast VR/MR Shipments to Reach 37.3M by 2030

TapTechNews August 5th news, according to the latest near-eye display device report of TrendForce, it is expected that the shipment of VR/MR devices will have the opportunity to reach 37.3 million units in 2030, and the annual compound growth rate (CAGR) from 2023 to 2030 is 23%.

TrendForce defines VR/MR devices as near-eye display devices that achieve immersive experience through a single display element, while those emphasizing transparent penetrability and the combination of virtual and real application scenarios are regarded as AR devices.

TapTechNews learned that TrendForce expects OLEDos to dominate the high-end VR/MR market, and the technology proportion will increase to 23% in 2030.

It is introduced that OLEDos uses CMOS technology to achieve higher luminous efficiency through top-emission OLED elements, pushing the basic specification of the resolution of OLEDos products to more than 3,000 PPI. TrendForce pointed out that due to the complex CMOS manufacturing technology and low yield, the production cost of OLEDos display screens is high, which limits the growth of its penetration rate.

The report shows that in the mainstream near-eye display device market, thanks to Meta's consideration of cost-effectiveness, LCD technology has always occupied a dominant position. However, these devices continue to pursue higher resolution and picture quality, while the display specification of LCD products is only 1,200 PPI, which has faced challenges from other technologies. LCD will continue to occupy the mainstream market, and the LCD technology proportion will be 63% in 2030.

TrendForce said that the competitiveness of OLED technology in the high-end market is not as good as that of OLEDos, and the cost-effectiveness is also not comparable to that of LCD products. In addition, the penetration of OLED in the VR/MR market mostly depends on specific manufacturers, and its penetration rate has been limited for a long time. From 2024 to 2030, the technology proportion of OLED in the VR/MR market will remain at 13% to 15%.
