MetaPlatforms Fined by Italian Regulator for Unfair Business Practices

TapTechNews June 5th, MetaPlatforms was fined 3.5 million euros ($3.73 million) by the Italian antitrust regulator AGCM for unfair business practices. (TapTechNews note: currently about 27.58 million Chinese yuan.)

According to AGCM, in the Instagram registration process, users did not explicitly obtain information about the collection and use of their data for commercial purposes, and in the case of suspended Facebook and Instagram accounts, Meta did not provide any communication information for users to raise objections. The Italian regulator said that Meta has currently terminated the controversial practices.

According to TapTechNews' earlier report today, the US federal regulator also hopes to split Meta, on the grounds that it concealed information during the preliminary review of the acquisitions of Instagram and WhatsApp.

Of course, this is not the first time the regulator has accused Meta of failing to provide information that may affect the initial merger review. In 2017, the European antitrust regulator fined Meta 110 million euros ($121 million) for providing misleading information in the WhatsApp transaction. (TapTechNews note: currently about 867 million Chinese yuan.)
