Leica Rumored to Introduce EVF on M12 Camera with Optoelectronic Hybrid Sensor

TechNews on May 13, Leica's M series cameras have always adhered to the classic design of rangefinder coupling focusing from the M3 of the last century to the current (2022) M11 model. However, according to foreign media LeicaRumors, certification information and internal rumors currently circulating show that Leica may introduce an EVF electronic viewfinder on the M12 camera.

Considering that Leica is unlikely to completely violate the ancestral design decision since M3 on the M series machines, TapTechNews predicts that the camera is likely to adopt the optoelectronic hybrid sensor like the Fuji X100/XPRO, that is, a camera equipped with both rangefinder coupled focusing optical structure and electronic EVF.

According to foreign media reports, the Leica M12 will ditch the camera ISO dial, restore a design similar to the Leica M240 (big M), and also add a thumb-controlled dial near the shutter button. The rear screen will be enlarged from 2.95 inches on the M11 to 3.9 inches (similar to the Leica TL style).

However, considering that the digital M camera update cycle for Leica is usually 5-6 years, the Leica M12 camera is expected to be launched in 2027-2028, so Leica may ultimately abandon such radical design.
