China Telecom Completes First 6G Satellite-Ground Link Test

TapTechNews June 20th news, China Telecom announced that recently, China Telecom Satellite Company, together with Beijing University of Posts and Telecommunications, Galaxy Aerospace, China Academy of Information and Communications Technology, Unisoc and other partners, successfully completed the first domestic 6G satellite-ground link outdoor field test in Beijing Earth Station of China Telecom.

This test utilized core equipment such as self-developed satellite simulator, terminal simulator, and software-defined test platform. On the basis of the project team formulating the key technology verification plan and building the outdoor field test environment, the first domestic outdoor high-speed information transmission test for the 6G access network was completed.

Based on the 3GPP NTN standard protocol, this test optimized the low-earth orbit satellite inter-satellite collaborative transmission mechanism and achieved high-rate air interface data merging at the terminal side. The rate exceeded 1 Gbps at the highest, reaching the 'industry-leading level', providing technical support for the future 6G demand research and satellite-ground integrated networking in China.

According to the introduction, as an important part of 6G, satellite communication will provide seamless, high-speed and three-dimensional coverage capabilities globally. Affected by factors such as ultra-long-distance between the satellite and the ground, satellite RF, and inter-satellite synchronous locking, realizing high-order modulation and high-spectrum-efficiency transmission is the core engineering problem of the 6G direct-to-satellite technology faced by the industry.

With the support of the key research and development plan projects of the Ministry of Science and Technology, the project team led by China Telecom carried out joint research and breakthroughs in core technologies such as the dual-satellite collaborative transmission architecture, multi-beam anti-interference coding, and multi-satellite multi-beam collaborative transmission, and completed the development of the completely domestic payload and terminal prototype.

This test simulated the technical feasibility of multiple satellite ground-based control beamforming under large Doppler frequency shift, and completed microsecond-level multi-beam synchronization and air interface data merging as well as smooth playback of 8K video at the terminal side. It explored the future 6G terminal direct-to-satellite application scenarios, laying the foundation for providing extensive services to vertical industries in the next step.
