The European Union Establishes Office for Artificial Intelligence

On May 30th, TapTechNews reported that on May 29th local time, the European Union announced the establishment of an Office for Artificial Intelligence to regulate artificial intelligence, support the development and use of trusted artificial intelligence, and prevent the risks of artificial intelligence at the same time.

The office is composed of 140 members including technical experts, lawyers, and economists, and has a chief scientific advisor and an international affairs advisor. It is divided into 5 departments:

AI and Robotics

Regulation and Compliance

AI Innovation and Policy Coordination

AI Security

AI for Social Good

The European Union stated that the establishment of this office will play a key role in the implementation of the 'Artificial Intelligence Act'. As reported by TapTechNews earlier, on the 21st of this month, the Council of the European Union officially approved the 'Artificial Intelligence Act', which is the world's first act to comprehensively regulate artificial intelligence.

The 'Artificial Intelligence Act' proposes a classification of the risk levels of artificial intelligence, which means that different treatments should be given according to the possible threats that different applications of artificial intelligence technology may pose to society. This law prohibits the application of artificial intelligence with a risk level considered 'unacceptable'.
