JEDEC Releases New CXL Memory Module Label Standard

TapTechNews June 25th news, The JEDEC Solid State Technology Association today released the JESD405-1B memory module label standard for the CXL1.1 specification, providing standard support for the standardization of CXL memory modules.

CXL memory modules provide a simple way for server systems that support the CXL specification to add a large amount of memory, and these memory modules typically use the EDSFFE1.S or E3.S specifications and support hot swapping.

The JEDEC said that JESD405-1B, along with JESD317A released in 2023 (TapTechNews note: the memory module reference basic standard applicable to CXL1.0), defines the functions and configurations of CXL memory modules, as well as the standardized content of the labels on these modules.

Among them, JESD317A provides detailed mechanical, electrical, pin layout, power and heat dissipation, and environmental guidelines for CXL memory modules.

And JESD405-1B clarifies the types of memory media (such as DDR5) that need to be included on the CXL memory module label, the version of the supported CXL specification, capacity, connector and IO configuration, as well as the QR code to identify the origin, simplifying inventory management.

The chairman of the JEDEC Association's board, Mian Quddus, said:

JESD317A and JESD405-1B confirm JEDEC's active support for expanding the market of CXL solutions. These documents are the result of the cooperation of dozens of companies representing CXL memory solution suppliers and end-users.

(With the support of these two standards) end-users can confidently buy CXL memory modules from a variety of sources, helping to commoditize these solutions and thereby benefiting the entire industry.
