According to Zhang Miao, the deputy general manager of the政企客户事业部 of Dongying Branch of China Unicom, the 5G signal of this platform has been upgraded to 5.5G and adopts three-carrier aggregation technology, which is much larger than the original 5G carrier.

With the advancement of the digital transformation of oil fields, higher requirements are put forward for the real-time high rate of production operation data, video images, and information collection data transmission on offshore platforms. Compared to 5G, 5.5G can achieve significant improvements in capacity, rate, delay, positioning, and reliability.

It is reported that the commissioning of the 5.5G network on the central No. 3 platform of Shengli Oilfield has greatly enhanced the information transmission capacity and quality between land and sea and meets the mobile, high-transmission, and real-time business needs of offshore platforms.

According to the official introduction of China Unicom, the smooth opening of the 5.5G three-carrier aggregation site on the central No. 3 offshore oil production platform of Shengli Oilfield fully guarantees the high rate requirements of data transmission for offshore platform operation data/video transmission and information collection. Compared to the previous ordinary 5G, the usage experience of 5.5G can be improved by 2-3 times.

5.5G, also known as 5G-A, is the enhanced version of 5G, realizing upstream gigabit, downstream ten gigabits, which can support the large bandwidth, low latency, and high possibility required for innovative businesses such as extended reality and naked-eye 3D.

TapTechNews learned that the 5.5G + offshore platform industry application not only empowers the construction of smart oil fields in China but also provides technical support for fishermen at sea, the inspection of the government's maritime affairs bureau, offshore wind power, and smart aquaculture. At present, China Unicom has achieved 5G full coverage along the 3345-kilometer coastline in Shandong, with an average depth of 50 kilometers to the sea and the farthest up to 100 kilometers, and the 5G network covers 64,000 square kilometers of sea area.
