MacRumors found that the corresponding code has already been hidden in the latest iOS 18.1 beta version, but Apple has not enabled this function for some reason for the time being. Before that, Apple AirPods Pro 2 has obtained the approval of the US FDA, meaning that this headset can become a non-prescription hearing aid at any time.

In today's iOS/iPadOS 18.1 developer preview beta 5 update (TapTechNews note: internal version number 22B5054e), Apple has added a hearing assistance function suitable for AirPods Pro 2 and tested it.

The relevant update includes a default-enabled hearing protection mode (providing passive noise reduction in noisy environments), and a clinical-level hearing aid mode. Users will use AirPods and iPhone to conduct a brief hearing test. If hearing loss is detected, a personalized sound configuration file will be created to allow the headset to adjust the sound dynamically according to the user's needs to help users better hear the external sound.

Apple said that the personalized hearing configuration file will be automatically applied to scenarios such as music, movies, games, and phone calls without adjusting any settings. The relevant functions can help people better participate in the conversation and stay connected with the people and environment around.

The hearing test will prompt the user to click the screen when hearing the sound and it takes about five minutes to complete. However, AirPods Pro 2 is only recommended for users with mild to moderate hearing impairment, and people with more severe hearing disorders may not be able to use the hearing aid function.

After completing the hearing test, the user can choose to turn on the hearing aid option. Then, the hearing aid will automatically adjust the sound around the user to address the inaudible tones and frequencies.
