Hassabis attended the 2024 UK Future Conference organized by the Institute for Global Change and said in a public discussion with the former UK Prime Minister Tony Blair:

If AI is measured as a general system, its IQ level has not even exceeded that of a cat. However, with the promotion of huge amounts of cash and computing investment, relevant research is progressing rapidly. Some people expect that in the next five years, the intelligence of AI can exceed that of humans.

Hassabis said that the focus of DeepMind's work is not artificial intelligence (AI), but general artificial intelligence (AGI).

TapTechNews translated his interview content as follows:

The current AI can write, draw or make music like a human, but its comprehensive intelligence is not as good as that of an ordinary domestic cat, let alone reaching the human level. However, AI is currently stronger and more excellent than humans in some fields such as games.

Hassabis believes that artificial intelligence will imperceptibly change human life and accelerate scientific research in the fields of energy, materials science, healthcare, climate, and mathematics.

Hassabis took this opportunity to introduce a project of DeepMind called Project Astra. This project liberates artificial intelligence from a simple chatbot (such as ChatGPT or Google Gemini) and has more understanding of the user's situation, environment, preferences, history, etc.
