China Mobile Launches First 800G Air-Core Fiber Transmission Network

On June 13, according to TapTechNews, according to official news from China Mobile, on June 6, China Mobile launched the first 800G air-core optical fiber transmission technology pilot network in Shenzhen-Dongguan, Guangdong. (Note: 1 kilometer = 0.621 miles).

This test was jointly completed by China Mobile and domestic fiber optic cable and equipment manufacturers. It verified the performance of anti-resonant air-core optical fibers under various conditions such as tension, extrusion, water vapor, and outdoor splicing in a real environment. On a 20-kilometer link, it achieved a number of core technical indicators such as a splice loss of air-core - air-core optical fiber as low as 0.05 dB, a connection between air-core - solid-core of less than 0.3 dB, and a cable loss of 0.6 dB per kilometer after laying, all reaching the 'world-class level'.

TapTechNews learned from public information that Hollow-corefiber (HCF) is based on a brand-new air guiding mechanism, able to guide light through air instead of glass, which can break through the capacity limit and delay limit of solid-core optical fibers, and has obvious performance advantages in backbone and data center transmission, and is the next-generation optical communication technology.

China Mobile stated that by adopting a single-wave 800 Gbps broad-spectrum optical transmission system, it further achieved a 20-kilometer single-core optical fiber bidirectional 128 Tb/s super-large capacity transmission test based on air-core optical fiber, proving that anti-resonant air-core optical fiber has the feasibility of deployment in a complex pipe network environment.

In this test, based on anti-resonant air-core optical fiber, the first preparation of a hybrid cable of air-core optical fiber and solid-core optical fiber was completed. The mechanical properties such as stretching, flattening, bending, impact, and torsion basically meet the requirements of general cable standards; at the same time, during the laying period, Typhoon Maliksi passed through Shenzhen and Dongguan. China Mobile, in conjunction with the domestic industry chain, for the first time, carried out the anti-resonant air-core optical fiber cable technology test under complex pipe network environment and extremely bad weather conditions, overcome unfavorable factors to open up the air-core optical cable of a typical financial dedicated line route in the Greater Bay Area, and can optimize the optical link transmission delay by more than 30%.

China Mobile will further focus on the fiber structure design for loss reduction of air-core optical fiber and for large-scale preparation. It will carry out key technical research and verification in the mode of collaborative R & D of ultra-800G transmission system and fiber design to accelerate the development of anti-resonant air-core optical fiber and its optical communication system.
