First Domestic Hundred-Megawatt-Hour Grid-Forming Energy Storage Power Station's Black Start Test

TapTechNews, June 19. TapTechNews learned from State Grid Hubei Electric Power Co., Ltd. that the Jingmen Xingang Energy Storage Power Station in Hubei successfully carried out the first domestic black start test of a hundred-megawatt-hour grid-forming energy storage power station on the evening of June 17.

Black Start (BlackStart) refers to that after the entire power system is shut down due to a fault and the system is in a completely black state, without relying on the help of other networks, through the generator sets with self-starting ability in the system, it drives other generator sets without self-starting ability to gradually restore the operation of the entire system.

Previously, the ones usually serving as the black start kindling were pumped-storage power stations or gas turbine power stations, but their ignition speed is relatively slow, while using the energy storage power station to ignite, the power restoration speed is fast, the power supply is large and lasts for a long time, with a conversion efficiency of more than 85%, which is superior to other black start methods.

The Jingmen Xingang Energy Storage Power Station is the first domestic hundred-megawatt-hour-level grid-forming energy storage power station. There are 16 container-sized energy storage units in the station, which are filled with lithium iron phosphate batteries. At the end of last year, the second phase of the power station was successfully connected to the grid, and its total capacity reached 50 megawatts/100 megawatt-hours, which can meet the electricity demand of more than 16,000 households for one day, and can also absorb nearby new energy to help the grid shave peaks and fill valleys.
