NMPA Accuses Spotify of Unauthorized Use of Copyrighted Content

TapTechNews May 16th news, the National Music Publishers Association (NMPA) of the United States recently wrote to Spotify, accusing the music streaming service company of using its members' copyrighted content without proper authorization.

Billboard shared the letter, pointing out that Spotify hosts unlicensed music works, including lyrics, videos, and podcasts, etc.

NMPA has asked Spotify to remove unlicensed content, warning of potential 'copyright liability' if they continue to use the content. TapTechNews note: NMPA is an industry association representing U.S. music publishers and songwriters, mainly dedicated to protecting music copyrights.

NMPA claims that while Spotify has mechanical and public performance licenses, using lyrics and music in videos and podcasts requires direct negotiation with the rights holders.

A spokesperson for Spotify told Billboard that the letter is 'full of false and misleading headlines.' Spotify then stated that the company set a record for payments to songwriters in 2023, with the potential to break records again in 2024.
