Google Pixel 9 Series Improving AI Performance with Reserved Memory

TapTechNews August 22nd news, Google Pixel 9 series phones aim to enhance AI performance by directly allocating a portion of a larger memory pool to the latest AI functions. Test results show that the Pixel 9Pro series reserves 3GB of memory for AI, and the actual available memory is 13GB.

AndroidAuthority, by analyzing the memory configuration, found that the Pixel 9Pro series adopts a new memory allocation strategy. Different from the previous Pixel 8 series, the Pro series dedicates 3GB of memory specifically to AI-related applications and services. This part of the memory is marked as Unevictable and MLocked, ensuring that it will not be reclaimed by the system or swapped to the storage device, thus improving the response speed of AI functions.

In the Pixel 9Pro series, AI core applications and EdgeTPU services occupy most of the reserved memory. The AI core application is responsible for model management, runtime, security functions, etc., while the EdgeTPU service manages the AI hardware of Tensor G4. These two services seem to share the same memory space to ensure that the AI processor can calculate efficiently.

According to TapTechNews' understanding, the benefit of reserving memory is that the Pixel 9Pro series can provide a more excellent AI experience. The AI core application always resides in memory, and the TPU can quickly access the required data, thereby achieving a faster response speed. In addition, reserving memory specifically for AI functions can ensure its stable operation when running other memory-intensive applications.

However, for those users who seldom use Google's AI functions, the reserved memory may be a waste. The actual available memory of the Pixel 9Pro series is only 13GB, which has not significantly improved compared to the previous Pixel 8 series. Therefore, for users who focus on game performance and multitasking, this may need to be considered.
