Apple to Upgrade iPhone 16 Pro Max Battery with Higher Energy Density

My latest supply chain survey indicates that the energy density (Wh/kg) of the battery cell of the iPhone 16 Pro Max will increase. The benefit is that there is longer battery life under the same battery volume or a reduced battery volume under the same battery life.

Increasing the energy density of the battery cell will increase the temperature during battery operation. To avoid the reason of overheating of the battery, Apple uses a stainless steel battery case as a heat dissipation solution for the first time.

Although the heat dissipation effect of stainless steel is not as good as that of aluminum, it is more sturdy and not easily corroded. Therefore, in addition to heat dissipation, the stainless steel battery case also provides better protection for the battery and the iPhone system.

Using a stainless steel battery case can also reduce the difficulty of disassembling the battery. This design can help Apple meet the requirements of the detachability of mobile phone batteries in the future in line with the EU regulations.

If this new battery design (battery cell energy density upgrade & using a stainless steel battery case) is mass-produced smoothly and the feedback is good, the new iPhones in 2H25 will fully adopt this new battery design.

Sunway Communication is the main supplier of the stainless steel battery case. The contribution of this order to Sunway Communication's revenue in 2024 is less than 5%, but because Apple has high requirements for the stamping production process standards, the gross profit margin is better than that of general metal stamping parts, which is beneficial to Sunway Communication's profit in 2H24.

Looking forward to 2025, if all new iPhones in 2H25 adopt this new design, the contribution of the order to Sunway Communication's revenue and profit in 2025 is expected to grow by 200-250%, which is beneficial to the operating momentum of Sunway Communication in 2025.
