TapTechNews learned from the recall announcement that for a small number of vehicles within the scope of this recall, due to the behavior of users modifying the steering wheel after the vehicle is sold, it is possible that the driver's frontal airbag of the vehicle may have installed a nitrate ammonium gas generator produced by Takata without a desiccant. When the airbag deploys, the gas generator may burst, resulting in fragments flying out and injuring people in the vehicle, presenting a safety hazard.

Because it is impossible to accurately confirm whether the steering wheel has been modified during use only through the vehicle production information, but the steering wheel of the affected airbag after the modification can be identified through the appearance. Users can log on to the website (https://bmwrecallsteeringwheel-c5.expertinquiry.com/) and check whether their vehicle steering wheel belongs to the affected modification by uploading the vehicle identification number (VIN code) and the steering wheel photo. After 14 days of login registration, users can view the inspection result by logging in to the website again. Users can also contact the local authorized BMW dealer and go to the store for on-site inspection.

For vehicles that are confirmed to have defects after the inspection, Brilliance BMW Automobile Co., Ltd. and BMW (China) Automobile Trading Co., Ltd. will replace the driver's frontal air bag for free to eliminate potential safety hazards.
