Ford Warns Owners of Unrepaired Vehicles after Multiple Recalls Due to Takata Airbag Issue

TapTechNews August 14th news, Ford Motor released a press release yesterday (August 13th), warning the owners who still haven't participated in the repair after the previous 3 safety recalls and hoping they 'do not drive'.

TapTechNews note: Since 2015, Ford has initiated three recalls namely 15S21, 17S42 and 19S01. The main reason involves multiple models equipped with Takata non-dry-type airbag gas generators.

Because the vehicles are older, the possibility of the components in the airbag exploding and ejecting sharp metal fragments in a collision is increasing, which may cause serious injury or death to the driver or passengers. Therefore, Ford warns the owners who haven't participated in the recall and hopes they do not continue to drive the unsafe vehicles.

Ford reports that a total of 765,600 Ford and Lincoln vehicles' airbag gas generators are affected globally, including 374,300 vehicles in the United States.

Ford and Mazda have warned 457,000 owners of older vehicles globally to stop driving before repairing.

Ford continues to contact the owners. So far, it has made more than 121 million outreach attempts in the United States alone, including letters, e-mails, phone calls, text messages and more than 1 million customer home visits. Ford says 95% of American customers have completed the recall.

The do-not-drive warning applies to all customers who haven't completed the 15S21, 17S42 and 19S01 recalls, and the involved models include:

2004-2006 Ford Ranger trucks

2005-2014 Ford Mustang cars

2005-2006 Ford GT cars

Since 2009, Takata airbags have caused more than 30 deaths, including at least 26 in the United States and hundreds of injuries. Over the past decade, more than 100 million vehicles with Takata airbags installed have been recalled globally. Takata was once the world's leading airbag supplier and filed for bankruptcy in 2017 after the scandal.
