In an article on his GatesNotes blog, Gates revealed that the book will touch on some of his less known experiences of growing up, such as not fitting in as a child, being rebellious during adolescence, facing the loss of a loved one, and almost being expelled from college. At the same time, the book will also tell the story of Gates' decision to jointly found Microsoft with the late Paul Allen.

However, TapTechNews noted that this memoir does not seem to cover the internal workings of Microsoft or Gates' other business adventures. The book's introduction states that SourceCode is not focusing on Microsoft, the Gates Foundation, or future technologies, but telling the story of how Bill Gates became who he is today: his childhood, early interests, and the pursuits he pursued. This is a story about humanity and the individual.
