Official Response to Li Auto L9 Ad Mistake Leading to Rear-End Collision Draws Discussions Software Improvement Promised

TapTechNews news on May 11th highlights a hot topic on Weibo where a Li Auto L9 mistakenly recognized an advertisement as a real vehicle, leading to a rear-end collision. A vehicle owner from Xiangyang, Hubei, reported that while using the autonomous driving system on the highway, the vehicle suddenly braked hard after detecting an image of a small truck on a high billboard, causing a collision.

TapTechNews found that the individual has since removed their comments from media platforms. According to a report by 'Red Star News,' the owner initially claimed that 'since the accident was due to the vehicle’s fault, the yet-to-be-registered new car was turned into a damaged vehicle, demanding a compensation of 20,000 yuan (approx. $2,860)'; however, the Li Auto dealership offered a compensation of 4,000 yuan in cash (approx. $572), and no agreement has been reached with the owner as of now.

An official from Li Auto responded claiming the cause of the accident was 'indeed the vehicle system mistaking an advertisement image for a real car,' and promised 'subsequent improvements to the software system.'

As per TapTechNews, the current smart driving technology in new energy vehicles generally remains at the L2 stage where systems and algorithms are not yet mature enough to replace human drivers completely.

Referring to the national recommended standard for 'Automated Driving Levels,' the L2 level of driving automation is considered as combined driving assistance, where detection and response to objects and events are the responsibilities of both the driver and the system, while the human driver remains the primary responsible party.

As previously reported by TapTechNews, Li Auto launched its 2024 L9 model in March this year, equipped with Magic Carpet Air Suspension Max, a 52.3kwh large battery, co-driver's queen seat on the right side of the second row, magic carpet driver's seat, SPA-level 16-point full-body massage for first and second-row seats, platinum sound system, 8295P high-performance version, and fourth-generation OLED screen. Additionally, the L9Max will come standard with ADMax and an electric step based on the L9Pro model.
