Microsoft's Windows 11 24H2 Hotpatching Feature and Its Withdrawal

TapTechNews August 24th news, the tech media WindowsLatest posted a blog yesterday (August 23rd), reporting that Microsoft released a detailed support document for the Windows 11 24H2 hotpatching (hotpatching) feature, and as of the IT Home's press release, the Microsoft official has withdrawn the document.

What are the benefits of hotpatching in Windows 11?

TapTechNews reported in February this year that Microsoft plans to introduce hotpatching (hotpatching) in the Windows 11 update, and in the future, users will no longer need to restart after installing the monthly cumulative update.

Microsoft hopes to improve the upgrade experience by introducing the hotpatching approach, and the company has already used this scheme in some Windows Server versions and Xbox, and now considers implementing it to the Windows 11 system.

The working principle of hotpatching is to patch the memory code of the running process without restarting the process.

The source said that Microsoft intends to use the hotpatching function on Windows 11 to provide monthly security updates so that users do not need to restart after installation. However, hotpatching depends on the baseline update (baselineupdate), and a restart is required once every few months.

This means that in an ideal situation, only the security updates in January, April, July, and October require a restart in a year. Other months will be served through hot patches without the need for a restart.

Microsoft withdraws the update

The source PhantomOcean3 posted a tweet on August 22nd, indicating that Microsoft tried to deploy hotpatching for Windows 11 24H2 in the August update.
