Increased Vulnerabilities and Ransomware Attacks in 2024

TapTechNews August 27th news, the network security company Flashpoint released the latest report, stating that a cumulative 17,518 vulnerabilities were found in the first half of 2024 (January to June), with the number increasing by 11% year-on-year, and more than 45% of these vulnerabilities were rated as high risk or critical in CVSSv3.

TapTechNews quoted the report as saying that information-stealing malicious software is continuously increasing. More than 13 million devices were infected and more than 53 million credentials were leaked in the first half of this year.

Redline is the most productive information-stealing software, infecting more than 3 million hosts and leaking more than 10 million stolen credentials. These data are being used to drive increasingly complex and more destructive ransomware attacks.

The United States remains the primary target of ransomware organizations, followed by the United Kingdom and Canada. Factors contributing to this continued focus include the presence of high-profile targets, the possibility of paying high ransoms, and the overall challenges faced in dismantling complex ransomware operations.

LockBit (a ransomware-as-a-service provider) remains the most prevalent form of ransomware, with a total of 428 attacks in half a year, exceeding those of Play's 175 and RansomHub's 169.
