In China, Driverless and Autonomous Vehicle Industry Advances, with Related Policies and Laws

TapTechNews August 27th, at the Promoting High-Quality Development series of theme press conferences held by the Information Office of the State Council today, Wang Qiang, the director of the Traffic Management Bureau of the Ministry of Public Security, introduced at the press conference that currently, China's driverless and autonomous vehicle industry is advancing in an orderly manner. The public security organs have cumulatively issued 16,000 test license plates for autonomous vehicles and opened 32,000 kilometers of public test roads, strongly supporting the verification and iterative update of autonomous driving technology.

The public security traffic management department has launched a number of reform measures in batches around the entire process and all links of the masses' travel such as license plate handling, road passage, and traffic accident handling, including simplifying vehicle registration and trading, optimizing the management of urban bus lanes, and promoting online video quick handling of minor traffic accidents. 250 million electronic driving licenses have been issued, and the electronic vehicle license has been piloted in 60 cities such as Beijing, and electronic vehicle licenses have been issued to more than 22 million vehicle owners.

TapTechNews noticed that the Ministry of Public Security also actively promoted the revision of the Road Traffic Safety Law, and made detailed provisions on aspects such as road testing, road passage, traffic violations, and accident handling and related liability investigation of autonomous vehicles. Currently, the revision work of the Road Traffic Safety Law has been included in the 2024 annual legislative plan of the State Council and the first category of the legislative plan of the 14th National People's Congress Standing Committee.
