Indian Smartphone Market Report Growth and Trends in 2024

TapTechNews August 14 news, according to the Global Quarterly Mobile Phone Tracking Report released by the International Data Corporation (IDC) today, the Indian smartphone market shipped 69 million smartphones in the first half of 2024, with a year-on-year increase of 7.2%.

In the second quarter of 2024, the shipment volume of the Indian smartphone market was 35 million smartphones, with a year-on-year increase of 3.2%. Although this is the fourth consecutive quarter of year-on-year growth in shipments, weak consumer demand and rising average selling prices continue to limit the rapid recovery in the first half of the year.

The report shows that the average selling price of smartphones in the Indian market increased by 2.8% year-on-year; however, the average unit price fell by 5.6% quarter-on-quarter to $248 (TapTechNews note: currently about 1775 RMB).

The entry-level (below $100) market share decreased significantly by 36% year-on-year to 14%, lower than 22% a year ago. Xiaomi continues to lead in this field, followed by Poco and realme.

The mass-level (100-200 US dollars) shipment volume increased by 8% year-on-year, and the share slightly increased from 42% to 44%. The top three brands are Xiaomi, realme and vivo, accounting for 60% of this segment.

The mainstream-level (200-400 US dollars) market share increased from 22% to 30%, an increase of 42% year-on-year. Compared with the previous quarter, OPPO, vivo and Samsung accounted for the main share, reaching nearly 60% of this segment.

The mid-to-high-end market (400-600 US dollars) share decreased from 5% a year ago to 4%, a decrease of 25%. vivo is the main winner, leading with a 25% share, followed by OnePlus and OPPO.

The high-end market (600-800 US dollars) accounted for 2% of the market share, and the shipment volume decreased by 37%. The main models are iPhone13, Galaxy S23 FE, iPhone12 and OnePlus12. Apple's share increased year-on-year to 61%, while Samsung's share increased from 21% a year ago to 24%.

The super high-end market (more than 800 US dollars) continued to maintain the growth momentum, increasing to 22%, and the share increased from 6% to 7%. iPhone15/15Plus/14/14Plus accounted for 77% of the shipment volume, followed by Galaxy S24/S24Ultra, accounting for 11%. Overall, Apple leads in this segment with 83% share, followed by Samsung with 16%.

In this quarter, the shipment volume of 5G smartphones was 27 million, and the shipment share increased from 49% in the second quarter of 2023 to 77%; while the average selling price of 5G smartphones decreased by 22% year-on-year to $293. In 5G, the shipment volume of the mass-level (100 US dollars - 200 US dollars) segment increased by 2.5 times, reaching 45% share. Xiaomi's Redmi 13C, OPPO's F25Pro, realme's 12x, Xiaomi's Redmi 12 and realme's C65 are the highest 5G models in the second quarter of 2024.

The report mentioned that the online channel shipment volume of the Indian smartphone market in the second quarter of 2024 increased by 8% year-on-year, and its share increased from 47% in the second quarter of 2023 to 50% in the second quarter of 2024. Motorola entered the list of the top five manufacturers in the online channel and ranked fourth, while vivo climbed to the second place, led by the T series models. Due to the severe hot weather in the main areas of India, the offline channel shipment volume decreased by 2% year-on-year in the second quarter of 2024.

Overall, vivo maintained the lead for the second consecutive quarter, releasing a number of new products in various price segments through the Y series, the mid-to-high-end V series and the flagship XFold3Pro. Motorola achieved the highest growth supported by its product portfolio in various price segments, and Nothing achieved the second-highest growth amon g all other brands.
