ByteDance Founders Donate 28.57 Million US Dollars to Nankai University

TapTechNews August 21st news, TapTechNews learned from the official public account of Nankai University that Zhang Yiming, a 2001-level alumnus of Nankai University and the founder of ByteDance, and Liang Rubo, a 2001-level alumnus of Nankai University and the CEO of ByteDance, announced today that they jointly donated 200 million Chinese yuan (about 28.57 million US dollars), mainly to support mathematical research and talent cultivation in Nankai University.

This year marks the 105th anniversary of the founding of Nankai University. The mathematics discipline of this school originated from the Department of Arithmetic established by Mr. Jiang Lifu in 1920, which was the second mathematics department in Chinese universities at that time. According to the introduction, since Mr. Chen Xingshen returned to his alma mater to establish the Nankai Institute of Mathematics (now the Chen Xingshen Institute of Mathematics) in 1985, the mathematics discipline of Nankai University has become a self-research and talent training base for mathematics with complete professional categories and strong research strength.

Earlier this year, there was foreign media news that the profit of ByteDance soared by about 60% in 2023, exceeding the growth of Tencent Holdings and Alibaba Group Holdings, but this news was denied by ByteDance: The media rumors about ByteDance's profit growth and data are not true.

In May last year, Zhang Yiming, the founder of ByteDance, added a donation of 200 million Chinese yuan to the Fangmei Education Development Fund to support educational public welfare projects such as vocational education and art education in Longyan City. After the additional donation, the total scale of this fund reached 700 million Chinese yuan. The Fangmei Education Development Fund was established in the Longyan City Charity Federation on June 22, 2021. At that time, Zhang Yiming made the first donation of 500 million Chinese yuan to this fund to help improve the quality of education and cultivate excellent talents in his hometown.
