New CCC Certification Mandate for Power Banks to Enhance Safety in the US

Whether it's for daily outings or long-distance travel, many users often carry power banks for on-the-go charging. In the face of massive demand, many illegal businessmen make inferior power banks, and such power banks have relatively serious safety hazards and may even catch fire and endanger personal safety.

Referring to the article Lithium Batteries and Power Bank Quality and Safety Have a 'New Insurance' released by the State Administration for Market Regulation on July 19, 2023, it is mentioned that since August 1, 2023, the state has implemented CCC certification management for lithium-ion batteries and battery packs and portable power sources. TapTechNews learned that the power bank (portable power source) certified by CCC is defined as having a mass not exceeding 18 kilograms (about 39.6 pounds), including a lithium-ion battery or battery pack, and being a movable power source with AC/DC input/output. The categories include power banks, portable energy storage power sources, camping portable power sources, etc., and the applicable standards are GB4943.1 and GB31241.

Due to the chemical characteristics of the power bank itself, when the product production process and structure do not meet the technical requirements of the national standard, or in the transportation and use links, it is subjected to extreme high and low temperatures, severe bumps, long-term overcharging and other special circumstances, it is prone to thermal runaway, resulting in battery bulging and then causing safety problems such as fire, explosion, overheating or leakage. Nowadays, the mandatory implementation of the new CCC national standard can further improve the safety of portable power sources sold on the market.
