Spotify Reverses Decision on Limiting Lyrics for Free Users

TapTechNews July 31st news, Spotify announced that free users will again be able to view song lyrics unlimitedly. This music streaming giant started testing a new feature last autumn, requiring paid users to view the complete lyrics, and free users were limited to viewing the lyrics of only three songs per month. This measure was fully rolled out in May this year, causing a lot of dissatisfaction among users.

In the face of strong backlash from users, Spotify finally decided to withdraw this decision. A company spokesperson said, 'In the next few weeks, we will expand the availability of lyrics for Spotify free users so that more people around the world can enjoy the fun of viewing more lyrics.'

Spotify CEO Daniel Ek said earlier this month at the earnings conference call that the company is planning to improve the experience of free users. He also disclosed that more improvement measures for free users will be launched in the coming months.

Spotify previously hoped to drive paid subscriptions by restricting free users from viewing lyrics, and its new subscription package starts at $11 per month (TapTechNews note: currently about 80 Chinese yuan). However, it seems that this strategy clearly has not worked.

In the second quarter of 2024, Spotify reported 626 million monthly active users, of which 246 million were premium subscribers.
