Kumamoto Governor Ready to Support TSMC's Potential Third Fab in Japan

TapTechNews reported on May 12 that according to Bloomberg, the newly elected governor of Kumamoto Prefecture, Japan, Takashi Kimura, stated that he is ready to receive broad support to attract TSMC to establish its third wafer fab locally.

Prior reports have indicated that TSMC is considering setting up its third wafer fab in Japan, also in Kumamoto, and planning to produce more advanced chips. However, TSMC has not engaged in substantive negotiations with local authorities in Kumamoto.

In response, Governor Kimura stated in an interview yesterday that they plan to provide full support for TSMC's new fab, while also aiming to develop Kumamoto Prefecture into a semiconductor industry cluster.

Referencing previous reports by TapTechNews, TSMC opened its first fab in Japan in February, with large-scale production expected to begin later this year. Construction of TSMC's second fab in Japan will also receive subsidies from the local government and is planned to start at the end of 2024.

These two fabs are expected to employ over 3400 employees and have driven a surge in land prices and infrastructure investments. The Kyushu Economic Research Center estimates that related companies will contribute about 10.5 trillion Japanese yen to the economy of the entire Kumamoto Prefecture over the next 10 years (Note: approximately 232 billion RMB).
