Essential company was founded by Android co-founder Andy Rubin, but due to various reasons the company closed in 2020.

The only phone that the company brought to the market is called Essential PH-1. The company also released Essential PH-2 and PH-3 in 2019, and was brewing a smartphone named Gem in the same year.

Rubin once showed a photo of Essential Gem in 2019, but this exposed prototype is different, and its external dimensions are closer to that of a remote control.

In this video, Wainwright demonstrated the details of this prototype, showing the unique tiled interface and design from various angles.

The Essential Gem prototype has a punch-hole camera on the screen, a camera module on the back and a fingerprint sensor.

There are tiles of different applications on the main screen. The UI elements of the phone will flip individually to match the landscape view. However, the notification area and settings menu are very close to the traditional Android system.

According to the exposed information by TapTechNews, the Essential Gem phone prototype is equipped with Qualcomm Snapdragon 730G processor, 4GB of memory and 64GB of storage space, the screen resolution is 2160x560 pixels, and the refresh rate is 90Hz.

Gem is based on Android version 10. Similar to Essential PH-1, this prototype also does not have a 3.5mm headphone jack.
