Apple Users Are Holding Their Devices Longer as Replacement Cycle Slows Down

TapTechNews July 11th news, the latest data from the Consumer Intelligence Research Partners (CIRP) shows that as the replacement cycle slows down, the time that Apple users hold their devices is getting longer and longer.

Apple Users Are Holding Their Devices Longer as Replacement Cycle Slows Down_0

In the last 12 months, at least 71% of iPhone users and 68% of Mac users said that the usage time of their old devices has exceeded two years, while in 2020 these two proportions were 63% and 59% respectively; however, the growth rate for iPad users is slightly smaller.

CIRP research indicates that the time Mac users hold their devices has significantly increased. Currently, at least 56% of Mac users are willing to use them for more than three years before replacing them, while in 2020 this proportion was only 40%.

Analysts point out that with the introduction of the M1 chip in 2020, Apple's Apple Silicon has achieved significant improvements in performance and energy efficiency, so Mac computers have been able to meet the processing needs of demanding tasks.

Of course, the outbreak of the COVID-19 pandemic may also have affected consumers' behavior. For example, in the early stages, the demand for remote work and online education increased sharply, and in addition, the subsequent economic uncertainties led to a large number of consumers becoming more cautious in replacing their devices, and they are more willing to continue using their existing devices rather than buying new ones.

Bloomberg's Mark Gurman has also noticed this phenomenon. He said: The proportion of users of older iPhones and Mac devices that have been used for more than two years has risen sharply. He believes that the possible reasons for this situation may include the following aspects, including the incremental improvement of new devices, the improvement of device durability and reliability, and the change in user needs.

He believes that for most users, their current devices can still meet the daily usage needs, so most users do not have the need or motivation to upgrade frequently, and whether it is the upgrade of the camera, storage space or processor, it is not that important.
