Google Experimenting with Running ChromeOS on Android Devices

TapTechNews reported earlier today that Google is experimenting with running ChromeOS on Android devices. They demonstrated a special version of ChromiumOS (codenamed 'ferrochrome') in a private event and successfully ran it on the Pixel 8.

Following this, AndroidAuthority released the first live demo of an Android phone running ChromeOS. According to the demo video, Chromium OS booted very quickly on the Pixel 7 Pro, initially had trouble connecting to the network, which was resolved by running a script. USB peripherals like keyboards and mice were recognized and usable by the system, but there were some audio issues that Google is currently addressing.

However, the script to fix the network issue requires root permissions, and the VM launcher needed to install the system is disabled by default, also requiring root permissions (or ADB operation). Google mentioned that in the future, network connection would not require the script operation.

Reports suggest that ChromeOS can also successfully boot on the Pixel 8 Pro, but does not enter the new device setup interface. Despite some current issues, it is believed that using an Android phone as a ChromeOS device is feasible. It remains unclear whether Google plans to make this project available to all users.
